Crunchy leaves and crisp mornings are wonderful signs that Autumn has well and truly arrived. As with all seasons, as well as enjoying the changes, it’s great for us as pet owners to be aware of any possible hazards or dangers that your pet might come into contact with during this time of the year.

Darker Evenings

As the sun starts to set earlier and earlier many of us are starting to walk our pets in the dark. To protect both you and your pet, reflective items can be an easy and effective way to keep you seen by cars and other vehicles. LED collars are another great way to keep your pet safe and seen when on the road.

Cat owners might consider keeping cats indoors during darker months when they are less likely to be seen by motorists.

Seeds and Nuts

Conkers and acorns bring delight to children and adults every year but might not be as good for your pet. Conkers unusually cause poisoning but the size and shape can cause gastro-intestinal blockages in pets. Signs of problems can include vomiting, retching, and diarrhoea in your pet and it is advised to contact a vet in this case.

Acorns are toxic to dogs, tannic acid causes kidney and liver damage. It is best to keep an eye on your pet when walking and be aware that signs of ingestion include vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal pain, and lethargy. If you are concerned that your might have ingested anything toxic contact your vet as soon as possible.

Fireworks

Watching lights dance through the sky is a real bonus of seasonal evenings but your pets might not be so excited. Keep your pets calm and comfortable by keeping them indoors, providing a safe space where they can hide and keeping them company if you know that this is a particularly stressful time for them.

Antifreeze

Frosty mornings may cause us an inconvenience and antifreeze might be a handy solution but for pets, it can be toxic.

Ethylene glycol otherwise known as antifreeze can cause serious injury and even death when ingested. It’s unfortunate sweet taste is also a draw for many animals and increases the danger of being potentially ingested. Mitigate your risk by keeping antifreeze sealed and away from children and animals and clean up any spills immediately.

Autumn is a truly wonderful time of the year to enjoy with family and pets and we hope these handy tips keep both you and your pet safe and happy during this colourful season.
