It comes as no surprise to hear that two-thirds of Britons choose to travel with their dogs when they go away on holiday. After all, they’re a part of the family, so it can often feel like something is missing when we holiday without our paw-fect pooches.

The UK is a nation of dog lovers, and boasts a host of dog-friendly locations and activities for we and our furry friends to enjoy.

Our very own vet Gill enjoys traveling with her lovely spaniel, Nuala; whether it’s long walks out in the country or bounding on a beach, they just love an adventure.

Last week, Gill and Nu hit the road and got away to the Lake District for some well-earned rest and relaxation. Here are Gill (and Nu, of course) with their top tips for a fuss-free trip:

1. Be prepared with travel water bottles and dog bowls

A very important tip – especially for the summer months! Make sure you’re always prepared with travel water bottles and bowls to be filled when out and about. Frequent drink stops will keep your puppy pal happy and hydrated.

2. Note down details of emergency vets near your location when you travel with dogs

Emergencies can happen at any time. Make sure you do your research in advance when it comes to locating a local vet facility. Note the contact details and address down so you’ll know where to go in case of an accident or emergency.

3. Bring medication for possible diarrhoea episodes

Unpleasant diarrhoea episodes can often happen during trips away, with dogs very susceptible to stress and changes in diet and routine. Luckily, medication can be used to handle attacks. We recommend Promax, a diarrhoea probiotic treatment, for keeping episodes at bay. Be sure to jot it down on your packing list!

4. Pack enough medication for trip

If your dog takes prescribed medication, make sure you’re organised when it comes to prescriptions. Check that they’re up-to-date, and that you have enough to cover the duration of your trip.

5. Have a tick-remover on hand for grassy terrain

If you’re on an outdoorsy holiday, the risk of ticks in the grass is something to be mindful of when out and about. Tick removers can be purchased cheaply, and make swift removal as easy and painless as possible.

6. Be up to date with flea/tick/worming parasite treatments

It’s sensible before you depart to make sure that your dog is up to date with all their current parasite treatments, including flea, tick, and worming medications. By doing this, you’ll prevent your dog bringing home some unpleasant souvenirs from their holidays!

7. Dog towels/drying coats

Beachy walks are a great opportunity for dogs to enjoy the water and make a splash. Bringing along some dog towels or drying coats in your beach bag is handy for quick drying after a dip – preventing you being splashed with a ‘shake off’!

8. Take along treats and energy supplies for long walks

We can all start flagging during long walks. Elderly dogs especially can become tired out and need frequent breaks. Have some snacks on-hand to keep your pooch energised and motivated.

9. Plenty of poo bags

Toilet break! Always be prepared for outdoor eventualities with a good supply of poo bags on hand for those little ‘presents.’ Dispose of dog waste responsibly too by using the correct bins.

10. Blankets and bedding in case things get cold

Even when holidaying in the summer months, Britain is famous for its changeable weather conditions. If a sudden wet or cold spell arises, you’ll want to have plenty of blankets and bedding on hand to keep your dog toasty and warm.

11. Toys and games to keep them busy

Dogs can certainly become bored when you’re away, so be sure to have enough toys and games available for your four-legged friend. Pack a ball throwing stick/launcher, chew toys, brain games, etc. and bring them out regularly for play time!

12. Leads and harnesses for long walks

Perhaps a no-brainer, but we’re all guilty of forgetting to pack important items before our trips! Don’t forget to put leads and harnesses in the case. Another important tip for travel with dogs – find out the rules for walking off-lead in your area of stay.
